| To produce the best possible nail lacquer (polish, varnish) finish it's necessary to have a well manicured base to apply the lacquer. This also extends the life of the lacquer.
This section goes back to basics and covers Pedicure and Manicure procedures as well as general nail care, regardless of eventual finish, if any. A well manicured hand should look sheeny smooth with or without lacquer no matter what age and nice looking cared-for feet are often overlooked. This section is split into Preparation and Lacquer(s) application. |

Pedicure
The procedures for Pedicure and Manicure are very similar. We're going to start with a Pedicure. At the end of this process your feet should feel silky soft, rejuvenated and ready for lacquer application if needed or just leave them. Either way they'll look great.
(a1) Pedicure Preparation - Gather the tools you'll need for the complete pedicure: Towel, files, 4 way nail buffer, hock stick, cuticle remover, cutters, nail scissors and moisturizer, Prepare a warm bowl of water mixed with a small amount of moisturizing hand cleanser, preferably T-Tree based. Soak both feet in the solution for about 15 min's if possible. This softens the nails, cuticles and soles of the feet.
(a2) Rough Skin - With one foot still in soak remove the yellow dead skin from the soles of your towel dried foot, usually on the heals and pressure points on the ball of the foot using a rough skin remover. Don't go crazy, just remove enough dead skin till just pink skin is visible. Re-soak feet and repeat if there is a lot of dead skin.
(a3) Shaping - With nails still soft, trim excess nail preferably with a file and shape. Chiropodists / Podiatrists recommend that Toenails be shaped with a flat straight edge. This helps them grow correctly and looks nicer. Try to avoid Nail clippers as they can split nails.
(a4) Cuticle Prep - Liberally apply cuticle remover cream to the cuticles. If cuticle remover cream isn't available use a thick lanolin based moisturizer.
(a5) Now work on the other foot while the cuticle remover is being absorbed, removing dead skin, shaping your nails and applying cuticle remover cream.
(a6) Cuticles - Wipe off the cuticle remover cream. Using the flat bladed end of the hock stick, gently push back overgrown cuticles to the nail line. If it hurts you have gone too far. Remove excess/flappy cuticle with a pair of Cuticle Nippers. Snip off any other pieces of dead skin.
(a7) Nail Surface - Some 4 way nail buffers are identified on each surface with their function ie remove ridges, smooth, shine etc. Start with the remove ridges surface and buff nails until smooth and opaque. Next choose the smooth nails surface and finally the shine surface until all nail surfaces are shiny.*
(a8) Finishing - Now wash your feet with soap and water to remove filings, bacteria and remnants of the cuticle remover cream. Use a hand brush to clean the sides of the nails. Dry feet, then massage in a deep moisturizer. Finally apply vitamin E enriched cuticle oil around all nails and work into the skin and nail. *
* If you intend to immediately lacquer your nails omit (a) shiny nail buff, (b) toe moisturize and (c) cuticle oil until nails are lacquered. This will provide a better key for the lacquer base coat. |
